The Jazz Ensemble gives students the opportunity to study the great masters of jazz. Instruction includes performance, history, improvisation and jazz theory. Since the fall of 2000, the Jazz Ensemble has been under the direction of Dr. Brad Sargent, and has delivered some of its finest performances to date.
Though the band meets three times a week in a full big band style ensemble, students are encouraged also to form small combos, and concerts include performances by both. In recent years, the jazz ensemble has performed as many as two concerts a year and as many off-campus engagements as possible.
Repertoire for the SU Jazz Ensemble showcases standards from the 1930's to contemporary jazz of the 1990's, and has recently included such standards as Duke Ellington's beloved Caravan to more modern works by such artists as Spyro Gyra.
