Is the Samford Band program for music majors only?
No! The Samford University Band consists of members from all university majors. Our band is a great place to make friends and provides a good social/peer group for all its members. In addition, the Samford Band program is designed to promote positive spiritual and social growth in its members.
What is the time commitment for Samford Band Members?
Most Band members have not found time management to be a problem even with the heaviest of academic loads. The marching band/symphonic band rehearses only two afternoons a week (Tuesday 3:15-5:00, Thursday 3:30-5:00), with occasional Friday afternoon rehearsals announced in advance. The Wind Ensemble rehearses twice a week (Monday 3:30-5:00 and Wednesday 3:30-5:00). Few classes conflict with these time slots and the band offers ways to resolve minor schedule conflicts. Our fast-paced and organized rehearsals ensure a minimum of time away from classes and social activities. We have a light performance schedule in comparison to high schools and larger universities. You will be able to participate in band and still have a lot of free and study time!
Do I have to have previous marching experience?
Each year we have several members who were home-schooled or members of a band program with no marching band. These students found themselves marching and enjoying it by the end of the first few days of rehearsal. Don't let your lack of marching experience keep you from giving marching band a try!
Does the Samford Marching Band have a "band camp"?
Yes! Samford Band Camp starts two weeks before classes begin. Camp information is sent early in the summer to those that have returned membership cards. Samford pays for meals and dormitory lodging for the camp. As an added bonus, band members have the opportunity to move into their regular housing before other students! During camp, we learn the pre-game and halftime shows, but we also spend a good deal of time enjoying fellowship and building our band community. There is free time to set-up checking accounts, get to know campus, buy books for the coming semester, and have fun. Most members agree that band camp is the best time of the year!
How much does it cost to be a member of the Samford University Bands?
Unlike high school band, University Band costs virtually nothing. In fact, all members are eligible for a scholarship upon audition, so you can be paid for your membership! Everyone is responsible for minor incidental costs.
Do I get credit and how am I graded for Band?
Band is a scheduled class for 1 credit hour. You are graded primarily on attendance at rehearsals and performances. Released time for university-sponsored events can be arranged through the director. Every member receives a syllabus on the first day of marching band or concert season that covers in detail our policies, performance schedules and additional information.
How do I audition for the Samford University Bands?
